What If You Are Not Broken—You’re Missing an Element?

How Water, Air, Earth and Fire can help you understand why you feel stuck—and what to do next.

You may not need another strategy. You may need to strengthen the part of you that your current strategy keeps leaving behind.

By Ash | Somatic Alchemist

Have you ever known exactly what to do—and still felt unable to do it?

You’ve read the books. Saved the podcasts. Bought the supplements. Written the plan.

Maybe you even have a folder full of workouts, meditations and recipes waiting for the mythical Monday when you finally become the woman who does all the things.

And yet, you still feel tired, disconnected, inconsistent or lost in your own head.

So you assume the problem is discipline.

You tell yourself you need to try harder, be more positive or find a better routine.

But what if you’re not lazy, weak or broken?

What if one part of your nature has become very strong because life demanded it—while another part has been pushed into the background?

What if the next step isn’t becoming someone else, but bringing a missing part of yourself back online?

The four elements are four ways of moving through life

I recently re-completed a simple four-element self-survey inspired by Debra Silverman’s Missing Element framework.

My scores were:

  • Water: 10

  • Air: 7

  • Earth: 5

  • Fire: 6

That result didn’t tell me something was wrong with me.

It gave language to something my body had already been trying to say.

My lesson here, yet again, is slow down, listen to your body.

Your body is speaking.

Water

Water represents feeling, intuition, sensitivity, rest and inner awareness.

When balanced: Water helps us feel deeply, listen to our intuition and connect with our inner world.

When it dominates: we may experience emotional flooding, withdrawal, numbness or the feeling that we’re losing ourselves in our emotions.

Air

Air represents language, curiosity, perspective and communication.

When balanced: Air helps us understand our experiences, ask questions, communicate clearly and see different perspectives.

When it dominates: we may overthink, become distracted or live from the neck up.

Earth

Earth represents nourishment, routine, reliability, boundaries and completion.

When balanced: Earth helps us feel grounded, safe, organised and capable of turning ideas into practical results.

When Earth is underdeveloped: we may experience inconsistency, unfinished projects, chaotic routines and difficulty creating stability.

When it becomes excessive: Earth can show up as rigidity, control and resistance to change.

Fire

Fire represents energy, courage, movement, visibility, passion and joy.

When balanced: Fire helps us take action, express ourselves, pursue what matters and feel fully alive.

When Fire is low: we may experience hesitation, flatness, low motivation or a loss of desire.

When it becomes excessive: Fire can lead to impulsivity, emotional intensity and burnout.

This is a reflective framework, not a medical diagnosis or another label to put yourself inside.

It’s simply a way of asking:

Which capacities come naturally to me—and which ones need conscious practice during this season of my life?

Your greatest gift can also become your hiding place

My Water score made perfect sense.

I feel deeply. I’m intuitive, private and naturally drawn to healing, spirituality and the unseen layers of human experience.

Those qualities have shaped my work. They’ve helped me sit with people through pain without becoming frightened by it.

But during the ending of a relationship and the beginning of a new life. I began to notice Water’s shadow side.

I was grieving, thinking about the past and spending too much time inside myself.

Meditation—something I’ve valued, practised and taught—wasn’t always settling me.

At times, more stillness seemed to pull me even further into my head and emotions.

My body kept asking for something simpler:

Walk. Lift. Dance. Feel your feet. Go outside. Complete one real task.

That was Earth and Fire asking to be included.

I’ve seen this pattern before in my own life.

I didn’t rebuild my health through one dramatic breakthrough. I rebuilt it through better habits, accountability, eating well, moving my body and consistently returning to the basics.

Slowly and compassionately, the body learns a new normal.

Insight can show you the door. Repetition teaches your nervous system that it’s safe to walk through it.

Your missing element may be hiding inside your symptoms

Think about the woman who is always caring for everyone else but can no longer hear what she wants.

She may need more Fire: desire, assertion, courage and permission to take up space.

Think about the intelligent, time-poor professional who can explain health perfectly but spends ten hours at a computer disconnected from her body.

She may need more Earth: nourishing food, physical strength, routine, rhythm and real-world completion.

Think about the high achiever who never stops, cannot receive help and treats rest as weakness.

She may need more Water: softness, restoration, receptivity and the courage to feel.

Think about the woman who holds everything inside and expects the people around her to read her mind.

She may need more Air: language, perspective and honest communication.

Can you see why another generic wellness plan may not work?

The plan may keep feeding the part of you that’s already strongest—while neglecting the capacity you genuinely need to develop.

Strengthen the element you keep avoiding

You don’t balance an element by understanding it intellectually.

You balance it through repeated, physical embodied evidence.

If you need more Water

  • Create ten minutes without producing, fixing or performing.

  • Take a bath, sit near the ocean, listen to music or allow yourself to cry.

  • Ask: “What am I feeling beneath the answer I give everyone else?”

  • Practise receiving support instead of automatically being the strong one.

If you need more Air

  • Say the truth aloud to someone you trust instead of rehearsing it privately.

  • Write one page to clarify what you think—then stop writing and choose an action.

  • Ask better questions before assuming you know what another person means.

  • Use your breath gently without turning it into another performance target.

If you need more Earth

  • Eat at regular times and build your meals around genuine nourishment.

  • Choose three daily priorities, with only one marked essential.

  • Finish one task before opening another tab, course or project.

  • Strength train, walk, garden, cook, tidy or do something with your hands.

  • Prepare tomorrow’s clothes, food and first action the night before.

If you need more Fire

  • Move vigorously enough to feel warmth and aliveness in your body.

  • Take one small action before you feel completely ready.

  • Join a social movement activity where play and expression are welcome.

  • Ask: “What do I want?” before asking what will please everyone else.

  • Practise one honest boundary or courageous conversation each week.

My movement-first rule for emotionally intense seasons

When I feel lost in my head, my current answer isn’t to sit still and analyse harder.

My sequence is:

1. Move

Walk, march, lift, shake, stretch or dance for a few minutes.

2. Orient

Look around and notice your actual environment rather than the movie playing inside your mind.

3. Name

Put simple words to what you’re feeling without building an identity around it.

Instead of saying, “I’m an emotional mess,” try:

“Grief is here today.”

4. Choose

Decide on the next useful action—preferably something that takes less than five minutes.

5. Complete

Give your nervous system physical evidence that you can affect your world.

This isn’t about avoiding grief.

It’s about giving grief a body, a pathway and a beginning and end—instead of allowing it to occupy every room in your life.

Questions you may be asking

What if I score low in more than one element?

Start with your lowest element or the one creating the clearest difficulty in your life right now.

You don’t need to overhaul your whole personality.

One small, repeatable practice is enough to begin.

What if my strongest element is also causing problems?

That’s common.

Your strongest element may be both your greatest gift and your default survival strategy.

The aim isn’t to remove it. The aim is to give it healthy support from the other elements.

Is this the same as my astrological element?

No.

This type of self-survey reflects the qualities currently available in your life. Your astrological chart is a different system.

Both may offer insight, but they shouldn’t be treated as interchangeable.

Can my missing element change?

Yes.

Different seasons of life ask different things from us.

New motherhood may call forward Water and Earth. Launching a business may require more Fire. A major transition may temporarily reduce your structure, confidence or sense of direction.

Your result is a snapshot—not a life sentence.

What if meditation currently makes me feel worse?

Don’t use spirituality to override your body’s feedback.

Try walking, strength training, dancing, gardening, cooking or gentle movement with awareness.

Stillness isn’t the only doorway to presence.

Sometimes your body needs movement before it can feel safe enough to settle.

If you feel persistently destabilised, overwhelmed or unsafe, seek support from a suitably qualified mental-health professional.

Does a low element diagnose a health condition?

No.

This is a personal-development framework. It doesn’t diagnose hormones, organs, mental-health conditions or Chinese-medicine patterns.

ACTION: Take the Seven-Day Missing Element Experiment

Choose one element you want to strengthen.

Then choose one action so small that you can repeat it for seven days without negotiating with yourself.

Water experiment

Spend ten minutes deliberately resting or feeling without trying to fix anything.

Notice: Do you feel softer, more receptive or more connected to yourself?

Air experiment

Speak or write one honest truth, then choose one practical action.

Notice: Do you feel clearer and less mentally tangled?

Earth experiment

Complete one essential task before starting another.

Notice: Do you feel safer, steadier and more capable?

Fire experiment

Complete ten minutes of heat-building movement or take one brave action.

Notice: Do you feel more alive, decisive and connected to what you want?

At the end of each day, ask yourself:

  • What changed in my body?

  • What became easier or harder?

  • What did I actually complete, express, feel or receive?

You don’t create balance by doing everything. You create it by consistently doing the small thing your system has been missing.

Your next step

Which element feels most like home—and which one have you quietly been avoiding?

Choose one practice.

Put it in your calendar.

Repeat it for seven days.

Don’t wait until you feel motivated. Let the action help create the feeling.

Because consistency isn’t punishment.

It’s how you slowly and compassionately rewire your habits.

It’s how you rebuild trust with your body.

And it’s how the woman you know you can be becomes visible through the choices you make today.

If I can rebuild through small, grounded actions, you can too.

What is your missing element—Water, Air, Earth or Fire?

Share it, write it down and choose your seven-day action now.

It's time to face the discomfort, embrace the fear, and find your flow.
